Football Merchandising, a Strategic Market Worth $14 Billion

With a global market of $14 billion and growth forecasts of 6.3% annually, football merchandising proves to be a strategic sector for clubs. After winning the Scudetto, Napoli strengthens its digital presence by partnering with Calicantus, the official Ecommerce Service Provider, to expand online sales and reach fans worldwide.

SSC Napoli: a Rapidly Growing International Fanbase

Internationally, it is estimated to have a following of about 45 million fans worldwide and 200 million supporters: Napoli is one of the most supported teams in Italy and around the world, and after winning the Scudetto, the numbers show a sharp increase. The latest success sparked celebrations not only in Naples, but also in international cities such as Buenos Aires, New York, London, and Istanbul.

The “Champions Parade” concluded the celebrations of the Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, involving over 350,000 people along the entire seafront. The total number of people involved in the city during the days of celebrations exceeded one million.

The television event was broadcast live on RAI both nationally and globally, totaling an average of over 70 million viewers during the broadcast, with 170 countries connected, who were able to celebrate the extraordinary Championship victory in every corner of the world.

On the Club’s official social media channels, the threshold of 200 million views was exceeded.

Digital as a Lever to Expand the Fanbase and Establish Itself as a Global Brand

This is a more than favorable moment to break down barriers and reach fans around the world through merchandising: that’s why Napoli is focusing on strengthening digital commerce by partnering with Calicantus, an Ecommerce Service Provider with over 15 years of experience in managing omnichannel online sales for prominent brands. The goal is to scale the online shop globally, making it more performant and up to the expectations of an increasingly global and digital fanbase.

Tommaso Bianchini, General Manager of the Business Area of SSC Napoli, stated: “For us, this is the beginning of a new phase in the development of our Merchandising project. After working on the innovative concept of self-production thanks to President De Laurentiis’ vision, our goal now is to reach our fans worldwide through a shopping experience that reflects the standards of major European clubs. Calicantus becomes our strategic partner and will support us in all the fundamental processes for the success of this business unit.

The Goal: an Online Shop Worthy of the Brand

As MoR – Merchant of Record, Calicantus will manage Napoli’s entire Ecommerce chain: from online sales to Ecommerce logistics and customer care.

Through this partnership, Napoli aims to improve the performance of its online store, but also to offer a wider, more modern range of merchandise in line with trends, improving the customer experience and attracting new customers globally.

“We are proud to support the 2025 Italian Champions in this digital transformation journey. For Calicantus, it represents an exciting challenge that sees us as protagonists behind the scenes, to build an Omnichannel Digital Experience that enhances the SSC Napoli brand and strengthens the bond with its extraordinary global Community emphasizes Valentino Bergamo, CEO of Calicantus – Sports Ecommerce today represents a complex ecosystem that must combine logistics, technology, and branding, reflecting the passion and identity of the team”.

An Expanding Market and a Technological Challenge

In 2023, the global football merchandising market reached a value of $14 billion worldwide, with forecasts indicating an expansion to $24 billion by 2032, reinforced by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3% (source: Global Market Insights Inc.).

Italian Serie A clubs are strengthening their digital channels: according to Ecommerce Italia by Casaleggio Associati, Ecommerce today represents one of the main growth levers for the sector, with an expected increase of 6.1% annually until 2030.

Key Challenges for Ecommerce in Football

The experience gained by Calicantus over the years has allowed the identification of some key challenges that football clubs must face to build a truly effective and sustainable Ecommerce channel.

One of the first points of attention concerns offer personalization. Today’s fans seek an increasingly direct and unique connection with their team, and Ecommerce must be able to respond with advanced solutions, such as on-demand printing, which allows the purchase of personalized jerseys with one’s own name or that of their favorite player, without creating inefficiencies in inventory. This requires a highly flexible technological and logistical infrastructure.

Another critical aspect is managing demand peaks, often linked to specific moments of the season: the launch of new uniforms, sporting successes, the Christmas period, or international competitions. During these times, sales volumes can grow exponentially, and the ability to manage the supply chain quickly and scalably becomes essential to not disappoint fans’ expectations and not lose revenue opportunities.

On the brand protection front, clubs find themselves having to proactively counter the phenomenon of counterfeiting and improper use of the Brand, including through advanced monitoring tools and collaboration activities with major online sales platforms.

It is also fundamental to create an integrated omnichannel experience, allowing fans to experience a coherent purchasing journey across digital and physical channels: from the online store to official points of sale, through events and social content. A user-centered strategy allows the club to strengthen its emotional bond with supporters, transforming the purchase into an experience.

International Expansion and Digitalization

For a club like Napoli, which aims to strengthen its identity even beyond national borders, it is crucial to address the complexity of international expansion. This means understanding and managing local regulations, tax systems, customs duties, and different payment methods, to offer a smooth experience even to fans abroad.

In this scenario, football merchandising represents a strategic lever to strengthen the club’s identity, engage fans worldwide, and innovate the way sports passion is experienced and consumed. With the partnership between SSC Napoli and Calicantus, an ambitious project takes shape that looks to the future of football even off the field, where technology and strategic vision become allies of fandom.
